CQ Inc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CQ Inc. still provide consulting and engineering services?

Yes, if you’re one of our alliance partners or if the work is of strategic value to CQ Inc. or if the proposed project is expected to lead to a commercial facility that CQ Inc. will build and operate.

If we buy clean coal, why should we be interested in new pre-combustion technologies?

You may be able to reduce emissions, improve power plant performance or lower fuel costs by purchasing coal from a different supplier who uses different technology, or by changing your fuel specification, or by purchasing poorer-quality coal and cleaning it yourself.

How does pre-finished hardwood flooring fit CQ Inc.’s business mix?

CQ Inc. is a process-design and operations firm. Our engineers and operators can apply their skills to virtually any manufacturing process — from cleaning coal to producing candy. Finishing hardwood is well within that spectrum.

Is it worthwhile to consider biomass seriously as a supplement to coal in a pulverized-fuel boiler?

Yes. There are federal tax credits (Section 45), various state-specific tax credits and/or renewables portfolio standards, and favorable economics that make it worthwhile to consider biomass, particularly because there are no technical barriers to using it.

Will CQ Inc. continue technology development?

Yes. We will continue our in-house R&D program and will collaborate with EPRI and U.S. DOE on projects that are strategically important to CQ Inc.

What does the acronym “CQ” stand for?

Coal Quality. The company started as a $75 million research program of the Electric Power Research Institute. Our mission was to determine the extent to which state-of-the-art technology could modify the quality of U.S. coals. The goal was to improve power plant performance and reduce emissions. In naming the company, we retained the connection with our roots while expanding into process-related businesses.

What type of background do I need to work at CQ Inc. or its affiliates?

You need a broad skill set and a creative mind to conceive new ideas that can be applied to process industries. Whether you are an accountant, engineer or plant operator, you need to be flexible, adaptable, and ready to pursue opportunities beyond your area of specialization.
